What tiger striping is
Vertical gray stripes on aluminum gutter faces, caused by roof runoff carrying shingle residue over the lip and oxidizing into the painted finish. It is a chemical bond with the coating rather than a deposit sitting on it, and that is precisely why it survives every ordinary wash.
Why house washing leaves it behind
A soft wash removes what is sitting on a surface. Striping is inside the finish, so the same gutter can come out of a house wash visibly cleaner and still obviously striped. Owners often conclude the gutters need replacing, when a brightening treatment costs a small fraction of that.
How brightening is actually done
A brightening agent is applied to the gutter face, given a short dwell, then agitated by hand along the run and rinsed. It is slow work, because every foot is scrubbed individually, and that is why it is priced separately from washing rather than bundled in as a free extra.

What causes the black stripes on my gutters?
Runoff from the roof carries shingle residue and airborne pollutants over the front lip of the gutter, where it oxidizes into the paint. The stripes are vertical because they follow the path the water takes, and they are worst under roof valleys that concentrate the flow.
Can striped gutters be fully restored?
Usually most of the way, and sometimes completely. It depends on how long the oxidation has been there and how well the original coating has held up. We test a small section and show you the actual result on your gutters before committing to the full run.
Should gutters be cleaned before brightening?
Yes, inside and out. Brightening treats the outer face, but working on a gutter still full of debris means it drains dirty water down the freshly treated face while we work. We do the cleaning first, in the same visit.
