Why the downspout is the usual culprit
A gutter trough is wide and shallow; a downspout outlet is a few inches across. Everything the roof sheds gets funneled into that opening, so it packs first and it packs hardest. When one corner of a house overflows and the rest of the run does not, this is almost always why.
How we clear and flush a downspout
We open the outlet from the gutter, break the plug up from above rather than driving it deeper, then flush the full length with water and listen for it running free at the bottom. Elbows and long two-story runs get flushed twice, because debris settles at every change of direction.
Downspouts that feed an underground line
Many Tallahassee homes tie downspouts into buried pipe running out to a discharge point in the yard. That tie is invisible and rarely maintained, so it silts up. We flush into it and watch what happens: water backing up at the elbow means the problem is downstream of the downspout.
Where the water should be going instead
Discharge belongs several feet out from the foundation, onto grade that carries it away, or into a drainage line that does. A splash block dumping against the slab is not drainage. If yours discharges into a bed at the corner of the house, we will say so and tell you the fix.
What a clean downspout cannot fix
If a run is crushed, pulled loose at the seam, or simply too small for the roof area feeding it, cleaning buys you one season. We look at the roof it drains and tell you when the honest answer is a second downspout or a larger outlet rather than another cleaning next year.

Why does only one of my downspouts back up?
Because it is doing more work than the others. Roof valleys concentrate water and debris toward one or two outlets, so the same house can have four clear downspouts and one that plugs every year. That corner needs checking more often, not the whole run.
Can you flush a downspout that goes underground?
Yes, and it is worth doing deliberately. We flush from the gutter and watch the discharge point. Water arriving there means the tie is open; water rising back up at the elbow means the buried line is restricted and needs jetting rather than flushing.
Do I need downspout cleaning if my gutters were just cleaned?
If the gutters were cleaned without the downspouts being flushed, then yes. Clearing the trough and leaving a packed outlet is the most common reason a house overflows within weeks of a gutter cleaning. Our gutter cleaning includes the flush.
Will flushing damage an old downspout?
We flush with water volume rather than high pressure, so a sound downspout is unaffected. Old seamed sections that are already separating can leak once water moves through them again, which is worth knowing — we point out anything needing resealing rather than letting the next storm find it for you.
